***Jamel***

When I got home, it looked like I walked into a bridal tornado. Bridal magazines, fabric samples, invitation samples, menu’s, it was all there, in my living room. It was a one-stop shop for wedding planning. I knew Jocelyn wanted a big wedding, so I was prepared for all the grandeur of it all. I wanted her to get a wedding planner, but she insisted on doing everything herself.

“Wow, it looks crazy in here,” I commented, as I stepped over a pile of fabric.

“Don’t worry Mel, I’m gonna clean everything up,” she assured me. Tiarra took my entry as her escape route. Jocelyn was forcing her to help plan the wedding since she still had two more days left on her suspension. I knew that Tiarra couldn’t wait to go back to school.

“Baby,” I said as I walked toward her, and then kissed her, “What is all this stuff?”

“It’s just wedding stuff. No big deal.”

“You don’t have to plan everything today. We don’t even know when we are going to have this shindig. We could have it four years from now if you need that much time to plan,” I told her.

“Four years!!! Jamel Alexander Arnold, are you trying to carry on this engagement for four years! I will not have it!” she said in a panicked voice. I cringed at the sound of my full government name.

“Whoa, whoa, whoa! I’m not saying that at all so calm down. I would marry you tomorrow at city hall if you would let me. But I know how much this means to you. I’m simply reminding you that you have as much time as you need to make it perfect.”

“Four years,” she muttered under her breath while picking up another magazine. I shook my head and laughed at her under my breath.

“With all this I might need to actually get a job to pay for it,” I commented. I really wasn’t concerned with the price at all, but I was expecting to spend at least $100,000.00 with all the things Jocelyn wanted.

“You mean I might have to get another job to pay for it,” she said. I looked at her.

“What do you mean?” I asked confused.

“Jamel, you can’t possibly think that I’m going to let you pay for my wedding,” she said.

“Your wedding?” I repeated.

“Yes, just like you said, you would go to city hall to get married. I want all this,” she said waiving her arms in front of her. “You shouldn’t have to pay for it.”

“Baby, I have no problem paying for any and everything you want. You know it will not hurt my pockets in the slightest I was just joking,” I reassured her.

“It’s not that. I don’t need a reminder that I am marrying a man who has done well for himself. But I want this to be traditional. Like the old days when the bride and her family paid for the wedding,” she told me.

“I can understand that. But I can’t allow it. I cannot allow for you to empty out your savings for this wedding, OUR wedding.
